STUDENT LEADERS

At Kerikeri Primary School we recognise the importance of developing leadership in our students.  Students at Kerikeri Primary School have many opportunities to develop their leadership. Leadership skills are a key component of our KORU values and our year six graduate profile.

Student Council
Each class has a representative and deputy representative on our school council. The school council meets weekly with Mrs Brown, our school principal. The students bring ideas and issues from their class to the meetings. They are also consulted on initiatives and happenings within the school.  What they think and feels strongly matters to our staff, BOT and school community

Year Six School Leaders at Kerikeri Primary School
Our year six school leaders are very important contributors to school life at Kerikeri Primary School. They are role models to all our students, especially those aspiring to be school leaders in the future. They organise and involve themselves in special events at KKPS which develop our KORU values and school culture. 

The position of school leader is highly sought after by our students and year five students are able to apply for a position in term four of each year. An important aspect of student leadership at Kerikeri High School is service to the school and community. 

School service is  delivered through the leaders’ involvement in:

Peer Mediation
Each year the  school leaders are trained in and rostered on weekly for peer mediation.  Being on and involved in peer mediation is an expectation of all school leaders.

School Events:
Our school leaders take an active leadership role in whole school events at KKPS. They assist our younger students at sporting events.  Coordinate and lead extra events such as mufti days and fundraising.  Welcoming guests to official functions and cultural events and working with our school PTA to assist with school and community events.

Community Service
This is delivered through active student involvement in

• Project Island Song (Habitat restoration, pest control and species reintroduction on the seven pest free islands of Iripiri Eastern Bay of Islands)
• Wairoa Stream restoration with the community group Friends of the Wairoa Stream (FOWS)

Kerikeri Primary School also participates in the BLAKE awards for leadership. Each year alongside Westpac Bank, one of our school leaders is awarded with the Blake Young Leader Award. The BLAKE Young Leader Award aims to recognise young New Zealanders (year 5-8) who show commitment to leading positive change in their community that leads to a sustainable future for Aotearoa.

Roopu (Group) Leaders:
We have four roopu at Kerikeri Primary School. These are Te Pou o Manako, Wairoa, Pokaka and Kororipo. All Kerikeri Primary School students are placed in a Roopu on enrolment. Two leaders are selected by the student for each roopu from our year five and six students. Roopu leaders are responsible for managing and supporting their roopu on our organised roopu days. They also lead their roopu when required for special events and performances. Enviro Leaders
These leaders are selected from across the school and involve themselves in environmental initiatives at Kerikeri Primary School

PALs (Physical Activity Leaders)
These are year five and six students who have an interest in encouraging students to be physically active. They organise and run lunchtime activities for all year levels at Kerikeri Primary School.
