Change the heading to Children with Special Education Needs
The school provides a number of interventions for children with additional learning and behaviour needs. Referrals are made through the Special Education Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo), Mrs. Kerry Maxwell.
Kerikeri Primary School is also a host school for:
- Resource Teachers for Learning and Behaviour (RTLB)
- Resource teacher of Literacy (RTLiT)
- Resource Teachers of the Deaf (RTD)
Whilst some additional programmes and external supports are provided, our preferred approach is to utilise Learning Support Staff and the classroom teacher to provide differentiated learning experiences that cater for all children within the classroom including those with unique and different needs: However, some interventions are best applied outside of the general classroom environment. If your child has additional needs we look forward to discussing their needs and how we can cater for these at KKPS.
Children with Special Abilities
We recognise that there are a wide range of students with many different abilities. At the Primary level, many children with special abilities are just discovering their potential.
Our programmes are differentiated for the individual needs of all children, Programmes catering for exceptional abilities recognise that children may either demonstrate high performance, or show potential for high performance.
The focus of special ability programmes is based around the need to provide differentiated curriculum opportunities that both extend and enrich the learning of these children in a variety of ways. Much of this is within a classroom environment however we do offer special programmes and opportunities to extend children in a range of areas. Some of these are listed below:
- Enviroschool
- School Leaders
- Garden to Table initiative
- PMP (Perceptual Motor Programme) for years 0,1 and 2.
- International Competitions and Assessments ( ICAS)
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
Children who qualify for support are given tailored ESOL (English as a Second Language) programmes that support them in accessing the New Zealand Curriculum. If your child has ESOL needs, please discuss these during the enrolment process.
Outreach Therapy Pets
This is a joint initiative between St John and SPCA Auckland. The programme involves volunteers and their pets visiting rest homes, hospitals and other health services as well as some schools.
Animal-assisted therapy has been shown to promote emotional wellbeing and it’s also used as an added therapy for children suffering from a variety of illnesses. Contact with gentle animals provides comfort and helps people to feel more positive.
We currently have one dog working with children in the library environment. They absolutely love Meg who has been through special training.

Food for thought programme:
This programme is based around healthy eating/reading labels and knowing what is in the food we eat. Students have two sessions, the first being an in-class session where the students learn what is in their food and what information a food label provides. The second session is a practical session held at the supermarket where students identify healthy and unhealthy options.

Lessons to promote being safe out in the sun. This is across the whole school with students learning what slip, slop, slap means and the importance of this.
Working with others:
Across the school teachers implement programmes that promote wellbeing.
Choices Programme
This programme is the initiative of the New Zealand Police. Constable Rob delivers the Choices programme to our year four, five and six students. It is based around teaching students how to make the right choices for them to prevent themselves from harm. It is in an interactive programme where students view, act and work collaboratively on scenarios which require discussion around choices and the consequences of these.
Bike Safety
Constable Rob delivers a practical bike safety programme to our year three to six students. It is delivered in two sessions. The first being a discussion on how to stay safe on a bike, the requirements of bike safety, such as how to wear a helmet, bike maintenance and the law around cycle safety. The second session is a practical session where the students bring along their bikes and Constable Rob takes them through a course, to practice what they have learnt.
