Room 16 at the Kawhiti Caves

A Trip to the Kawiti Caves

I was overjoyed to hear our class was going on the trip to the Kawiti glow worm caves. We lined up in front of a huge tree. Behind that the cave entrance looked like a huge fossil with stalactite and stalagmite teeth. We were entering a cave.

When we walked in I started to shiver. It looked like someone had spilt white chocolate on the walls. A wooden board walk stretched a mile down into the cave. I was amazed at the number of stalactites drooping down like bull horns. Further along the lanterns were turned down and glow worms shone like shimmering stars. When we walked a bit more we saw huge old columns stretching up like chewing gum from the ceiling to the floor.

Finally a huge blob of sunlight dragged me us to the exit. We tramped back down the hillside with the parents to have some lunch before we drove back to school with the parents. That trip scared my nerves. It was fantastic.

The Kawiti Glow Worm Caves

The mouth to the cave was like a dinosaur mouth.

It was dark inside like a rock tunnel.

The walls were like melting ice cream.

Stalactites hung down like big monster teeth.

Stalagmites grew from the ground like sharp needles.

Above us glow worms sparkled like a milky way.

Then a circle of light showed us the exit
